Bathroom taps

One from the delights of the English course which I’ve recently completed was the comparisons that it made between American English and British English.

On the whole, the Americans go for the simplest form of the language yet in some areas it’s the more complex spelling such as bathroom faucets rather than bathroom taps, apartment rather than flat anitd so on.

Perhaps the biggest question though is whether or not us Brits will ever drop the “u” from colour? The reason it’s there in that and similar words is that they were taken from the French thus “coleur” became “colour” when obviously in “real English” it would more logically be “color”.

Interestingly, at one time it was thought by some people that American and English would eventually become separate languages but that was in the days before international radio and TV transmissions and the Internet. Somehow it seems pretty unlikely that there’ll ever be a really significant separate in the two dialects so long as we remain in such close contact as we are at the moment.
