Specialised stores online

One of the things that always surprises is just how diverse the stuff on the Internet really is.

We’re all accustomed to booking hotels and flights online and we’ve all been buying books, CDs and DVDs for many years too. However, the offerings are a good deal more diverse than that eg up until quite recently I received an invitation to buy my Christmas cake from some place in Texas. OK, you don’t really associate Texas with Christmas cakes but obviously they “do” Christmas there so there’s a shop that sells them both locally and, at least until fairly recently, online too.

I find that clothes are something of a complication to buy online but the shops selling them go out of their way to simplify the process and if you’re looking for something special and unique in terms of, say, a hat then you’ll usally find that the online store has a much, much wider range to choose from than your equivalent local shop.

Just how DO you find a decent webhost?

June 14th, 2008

As you know we had something of a nightmare experience trawling through various hosting services earlier in the year before we settled on one (for now). It wasn’t that we were using cheapo services either although ironically the cheapest service was by far the most reliable and we were only forced to dump it when it turned out that their service was just not good enough when we finally hit a problem with them.

Web hosting rating is hoping to change that and the signs so far look good. For instance, they’re currently working through a series of web hosting articles which addresses lots of the issues that I ran into myself. For example, their one on checking out a cheap service is very obvious to me now but only with the benefit of 20/20 hindsight. In my own case it was the technical support that I found was bad both among the cheaper hosts and some relatively expensive ones. So far, I’ve been lucky with the speed but the final point they make in the article does worry me a little as the current host are known for offering “the moon” so perhaps that’ll cause me some problems down the line a ways.

We’re going to be reviewing our hosting after the summer and all being well I’ll be able to have a more balanced assessment of potential hosts via WHR.

Looking for some new golf clubs?

June 14th, 2008

‘Tis the time of year when many a golfer sets out in search of new clubs.

It’s not that we really need them, of course, as most of the time clubs last pretty much forever if you get a decent set to begin with. However, if you’ve not got a decent set such as the Cobra golf clubs then that’s a reasonable excuse to see about upgrading to the ones that you know you really should have bought to begin with.

The slightly better makes do make quite a difference in your game although sometimes they’re quite a bit more expensive.
