Choosing your online degree

As in everything else, online degree programmes are becoming very popular but, of course, popular doesn’t necessarily mean good.

The key thing is to make sure that you earn a degree online rather than simply send money and receive a certificate in the post. Unfortunately, the difference isn’t necessarily obvious as there are so many organisations out there offering online degrees these days that it’s unlikely that you’d be able to recognise the legitimacy simply by the name and, as always, the quality of the website doesn’t necessarily bear any relation to what you’d be likely to receive in terms of an education.

It’s not all doom and gloom in your choice though. There are lots of review sites around and you can check up on the accreditation too (don’t bother with places that aren’t accredited). This’ll help you trim down your list of possible places to do your degree. Don’t be surprised if it includes a whole bunch of places that you’d never heard of before. Often the least well known places online are much better than the best known places in the real world as the lesser known places really need to work at it whereas the well known places can sometimes rely too much on their reputation.

One final thing to be very careful with is the time limits that may apply in obtaining your degree. On online degree can be just as time consuming as a normal one so you can find once you start that you need to extend the period over which you’ll be doing your courses quite a bit to fit in with your other committments.
