Deciding on a home alarm system
The decision process involved in installing or not a  home alarm system is sometimes a peculiar one, isn’t it?
Obviously, if you’re in a high crime neighbourhood then it’s a no-brainer. Installing one can make the difference between having your home being the one broken into and the otherwise idential house of your neighbour if they don’t have an alarm.
However, most of us choose not to live in high crime areas which makes the choice somewhat muddier. Sure, if a burglar has a choice of two pretty much identical properties and one has an alarm whilst the other one doesn’t, then he’ll (’tis nearly always “he”) choose the one without the alarm, won’t he? Ah, well, that’s where the answer is “it depends”. The snag is that if you’ve chosen to install an alarm, then that could be taken as an indication that you’ve something worth stealing, couldn’t it?
Of course, over time the decision becomes somewhat easier, albeit for all the wrong reasons. Once someone in an area has decided to install an alarm then you have the twin effects of making their house that little bit more protected and once people see how easy the installation is it can tip the balance towards them deciding to install one. Thus, whilst the area in which our house is we were amongst the first homes to have an alarm fitted yet only five or six years later when we look down the street there are few houses without an alarm. That’s not down to rising crime, but largely because of the two reasons mentioned earlier.
Not such a simple choice after all, is it?
