GPS tracking devices
We’ve all seen the GPS based navigation systems in the shops and increasing numbers of them are finding their way into our cars these days. However, there’s another side of the GPS technology which is in the form of devices that can track where they’ve been, the speeds travelled and how long they’ve spent at each stop.
Obviously your normal GPS device doesn’t do that kind of thing in any detail (although many can and do record trip information in the form of average and maximum speed) and indeed they usually make a point of telling you that installing them in your car doesn’t mean you can be tracked. The GPS Tracking devices are quite different in nature and intent in that they are targetted at a range of, mainly commercial, applications such as assisting as a hi-tech version of the old style trip meter that trucks used to have. But there’s an increasingly common domestic application and that’s ensuring that your kids haven’t headed off into “bad areas” and the like.
How do you use the things though? Well, they’re very small in that they don’t need a screen and basically just need the GPS location technology plus a battery to run it and some memory to store the information. In fact, they’re very much like a bloated USB key in size. Once you plug them into your computer it’s a doddle to view the information through Google Earth.
Ah, but what does all this cost? Around $200 at the moment although as always with electronics it’s well worthwhile shopping around.
