How will we do the move this time?
April 2nd, 2008Last time around, we hired a truck and did the move ourselves. I thought it was a bit of an adventure, Wendy said “never again” so it looks like this time it’ll be professional movers that’ll be doing the work.
In practice, there’s a whole range between letting the movers do it all and doing it yourself. I suspect that many people will, like us, fall somewhere between the two extremes. For example, you can get the movers to do all the packing or you can pack the stuff yourself with them just loading it into the truck, you can pack it all and drive the truck or have them do the driving (don’t underestimate how tiring driving even a small truck can be).
Although it sounds daft, in fact the initial preparations for a move need to start at least eight weeks before the move. No matter how much you’re planning on handing the job over to the professionals, there’s a surprising amount that you need to do yourself and it’s very worthwhile looking at their move planning guides. We’re in an even more complicated situation as we’ll need to close down the business locally and activate the company that we’ve already set up to hold our business interests that aren’t based here. Although that company is already set up, we’ve quite a lot of work to do in closing down the company here and transferring things to the new company which would easily fill the eight weeks by itself I suspect yet we can’t start on that ’til we get a firm date for the sale.
Oh, and there’s the small matter of finding somewhere to live too ![]()
