Is HDTV just a big con to get us to buy a new TV, video recorder, camcorder, etc.?

August 4th, 2008

It certainly seems like that sometimes, doesn’t it?

The electronics companies have a problem in that normal TV is good enough for the majority of people. Let’s face it, who really needs a flat screen TV whilst their existing one is still working? Hence, of course, the arrival of HDTV.

Well, not exactly. As you’ll have noticed from the most cursory of glances around a TV shop, the sizes of TV screens has taken something of a leap upwards. Sure, if you replace a 26″ normal TV with a 26″ flat screen one, you don’t need HDTV but then chances are you’ll replace that 26″ model with a 42″ one and when you do, you’ll find that HDTV is actually quite a good idea after all.

Even if you don’t have that massive TV screen right now, one area where it’s worth considering an upgrade is with your camcorder. That’s taking images that you will, in due course, be viewing on a large flatscreen TV even if you don’t have one at the moment. Therefore, it’s best to buy the HD version now as you’ll not be able to upgrade the image quality later.
