Keeping an eye on your webhosting service

Once they’ve chosen a web hosting service most people just stick with their choice unless the service becomes so dire that they’re forced into a move.

However, whilst you wouldn’t want the hassle of moving your hosting every month or two it does make sense to review your hosting every year or two as what’s on offer and how well the various hosts are performing can change quite dramatically over that kind of period. For example, in our own case it’s been over a year since we last properly reviewed our own web hosting and I was quite surprised to see that the top 10 hosts include four that weren’t there when we made our choice last year.

In particular, it’s quite noticeable that “unlimited” features a lot in the top offerings now which I guess is only natural given the constant reduction in the costs of storage, bandwidth and the like. The pricing generally of the new entrants is a couple of dollars a month below what we’re currently paying which isn’t a great deal for us but on the other hand it’s a couple of dollars a month that would be better resting in my pocket than that of my hosting company.

What’s also good to see is that a lot more hosting services are getting perfect marks on the reviews which can only be good no matter what hosting service you use as it indicates a general rise in service levels.
