Why not take in a few Italian cities now and avoid the crowds?

February 11th, 2008

Although we’re in the midst of the winter season, that’s no reason to reject out of hand visits to some of the more cultural cities around Europe. In fact, it’s even more reason to go as you’ll get to see the sights without the customary hoards of tourists jossling for position to get the best view.

The prices are much better too. For example, the rather elegant Hotel Principe Di Savoia is one of the hotels in Milan that can be had for under $300 at the moment when it normally starts from nearer $400. Rome hotels are no different and it’s not even worth considering Rome at peak times such as Easter as the crowds are simply stiffling. Hotels in Florence aren’t quite so bad but it’s another place best avoided in the summer if you want to make the most of it.

The one obvious exception to this are Venice Italy hotels where you are likely to find many full around Valentine’s Day of course but outside that week, you’ll have the place pretty much to yourself in the winter and have the time to explore all those romantic alleys. One downside if you’re too far outside the main tourist seasons is that you might not have the option of a gondola ride.
