You’ve got HD at home, so why not use it in your work based video conference setup?

February 7th, 2008

High definition (HD) TV systems have been available in the shops for some time now as I’m sure you know and, of course, the picture quality available with it is quite stunning.

HD video conferencing technology is now available for business to business video conference setups as well and it’s an equally massive leap forward in performance and useability. The technology supporting it in terms of network connections has also moved on considerably to keep pace with the transfer speeds required by HD quality images so you don’t get the lag that was (and is) commonplace in lower definition systems.

As in all leading edge technologies, this gear is far from cheap with HD cameras coming in around the $4,000 mark and don’t forget that you’re talking about 4Mb/s as a baseline for your connection speed too. However, now that it is available off the shelf the price drop as compared to a proprietary system is very substantial (in the tens of thousands of dollars).

However, aside from the substantial reduction in price the biggest advantage of these off the shelf solutions is that they don’t tie you into a proprietary architecture as the higher priced systems tend to and with the rate at which technology changes these days being tied into any single architecture is the very last thing that you would want.
